Alcohol related deaths have hit a record-high in England and Wales, according to new figures from the Office for National Statistics. During the first nine months of 2020, 5,460 deaths were registered with alcohol stated as the cause – up 16% compared to the same period in the previous year, and the highest number recorded since records began in 2001. The coronavirus pandemic has led to a spike unemployment as well as people spending more time alone at home, turning to alcohol to cope.
Excess drinking can cause a number of harmful effects on the body – including a weakened immune system, liver disease, and memory loss to name just a few. A new informative graphic produced by Crest View Recovery Center outlines 5 of the biggest effects of alcohol on the body.
